Arethusa bulbosa
1. How to Identify
A single magenta-to-pink bloom on a slender stem up to 15 cm tall (≈ 5 in). Look for its prominent lower lip, which features distinct white and yellow fringed crests that resemble an open, gaping mouth.
Typically blooms in late spring to early summer (late May through June).
2. Where to Look
Found in nutrient-poor, highly sensitive wetland habitats, including sphagnum bogs, peaty swamps, and wet lowlands.
These orchids depend heavily on specific soil fungi and delicate hydrology to survive, making them unable to thrive in disturbed or transplanted environments.
3. How to Protect Local Populations
Never pick, dig up, or attempt to transplant a wild orchid. Moving Arethusa bulbosa severs its symbiotic fungal network, causing the plant to die.
Stick strictly to established boardwalks or footpaths when exploring bogs and wetlands. Foot traffic compresses soft sphagnum moss and destroys underground corms.
Support local conservation efforts aimed at preserving wetland ecosystems and preventing agricultural runoff or drainage, which alter the delicate water quality these plants require.
