species listed as endangered by the U. S. Department of Interior, as enumerated in the Code of Federal Regulations 50 CFR 17.11.
Rhodiola integrifolia
How to Identify
Succulent-like perennial featuring fleshy, waxy green leaves along elongated stems topped with dense clusters of small, deep red-to-orange flowers. It derives its common name from the distinct rose-like scent given off by its roots.
Where to Look
Found almost exclusively on cool, north-facing, shaded cliff faces and dripping shale gorge walls that mimic cold post-glacial conditions and provide continuous moisture.
Extremely localized in New York, with the only original wild population along the western cliffs of Seneca Lake, alongside newly established experimental sites in Tompkins County's Cascadilla Gorge.
How to Protect Local Populations
Stay strictly on designated gorge trail footpaths and boardwalks; never attempt to climb cliff faces or disturbance-prone gorge walls where reestablished populations are taking root.
Support local climate resilience and conservation efforts, as rising global temperatures directly threaten the cool, damp cliff microclimates this ancient species requires to survive
